The blue dots show lagoons, water bodies or impounded areas that are designated Flood Storage Areas. These form part of a Flood Risk Management System, and are normally used during high water levels to attenuate peak river flows to help the management of flooding.

Many Flood Storage Areas remain dry for most of the time, and only come into operation during times of flooding, so are not easily recognisable. Whilst some are lakes with control structures that hold back more water during times of flooding.
